Allergy Complications

While some allergies are mild and common, some of the allergic reactions can actually be life-threatening. Anaphylaxis, for example, is a serious reaction to the exposure of allergens. Any allergen can cause the signs; suddenly narrowed airways, increased heart rate, possible swelling of the tongue and mouth.

Allergy symptoms can create many complications. A healthcare professional can help you determine the cause of your symptoms and its severity.

Allergy-induced asthma

Asthma is a common respiratory condition that causes difficulty in breathing. Asthma is closely linked to allergies. However, allergies tend to make existing asthma worse. When asthma and allergies occur together, it’s called allergic asthma.

Allergy Complications

Allergies vs. Cold

A runny nose, sneezing, and coughing is common symptoms of a cold. It may also be a symptom of an allergic reaction. However, additional signs and symptoms may help you distinguish between the cause. As for example, allergies may lead to rashes on the skin and itchy eyes. Whereas, common cold will cause body aches or fever.

Allergy Cough

Unlike a chronic cough, a cough caused by allergies and hay fever is temporary. This is a seasonal allergy which may be caused during specific times of the year when plants are first blooming. It’s the result of your body’s overreaction to allergens.

Allergies and Bronchitis

Viruses or bacteria can cause bronchitis. It can also be the result of allergies. Bronchitis can be acute that ends after several days or chronic that can linger for months, possibly longer. It may also return frequently.

Exposure to common allergens is a common cause of chronic bronchitis. These allergens include:

  • Cigarette smoke
  • Air pollution
  • Dust
  • Pollen
  • Chemical fumes
  • A cough is the only common symptom of chronic and acute bronchitis.
Allergies and babies

Skin allergies are more common in younger children today as their skin is more sensitive and more prone to allergies. Respiratory and food allergies become more common as children grow.

Common skin allergies on babies include:
  • Eczema: This is an inflammatory skin condition that causes red rashes that itch.
  • Allergic contact dermatitis: Appears when the baby comes in contact with the irritant. It may develop into painful blisters and cause skin cracking.
  • Hives: Hives are red bumps or raised areas of skin that develop after exposure to an allergen.
